Frequently Asked Questions

Questions About TMJ Evaluations

What is TMJ or TMD?

TMJ refers to the temporomandibular joint, which connects the lower jaw to the skull. TMD describes conditions involving the jaw joints, chewing muscles and related structures. Symptoms may include jaw pain, facial soreness, clicking, popping, locking, limited opening or difficulty chewing.

What happens during a comprehensive TMJ evaluation?

Your evaluation includes a detailed history and symptom assessment, an examination of the jaw joints and facial muscles, evaluation of jaw movement and range of motion, diagnostic imaging when appropriate, and an assessment of your bite. Dr. Parminder Atwal will review the findings with you before making treatment recommendations.

Do I need a referral?

A referral is not required. You may contact Las Vegas TMJ & Jaw Pain Center directly to request a comprehensive TMJ evaluation.

Can TMJ disorders contribute to headaches?

Jaw-joint and facial-muscle problems may contribute to certain headaches and facial-pain symptoms. However, headaches can have many causes. Your evaluation helps determine whether the jaw joints, muscles or bite may be contributing to your symptoms. We may recommend evaluation by another healthcare professional when appropriate.
